How to Fix a Blue Screen Error

Getting a blue screen is perhaps one of the worst things that could happen to your PC. No version of Windows is safe from this type of error. Thankfully, it’s also quite simple to address this problem and stop it from troubling your system.

Here are 4 simple steps to fix a blue screen error:

1. Check your PC’s registry
The Windows registry contains all the vital data in your computer. The installed hardware and software programs are also registered here. Unfortunately, registry entries can be corrupted, which often leads to loss of important information required to keep programs and tasks running smoothly. As a result, a blue screen error occurs and freezes your computer.

When this happens, the first thing you need to do is to use a registry cleaner and repair software. You can easily download it, some even for free. This helps you save money because you no longer need to bring your computer to a technician as you can fix the problem yourself.

2. Scan for viruses, spyware and adware
If checking your Windows registry didn’t work, the next step is to run a virus, spyware and adware scanner, which is also available for free online. Viruses don’t usually cause blue screen errors but it’s always a possibility.

The scan you perform in this step will take longer than the registry cleaner because it will thoroughly check your hard drive. For better results, it’s advisable to perform a virus, spyware and adware scan weekly.

3. Uninstalling and reinstalling a particular program
More drastic action is needed if the first two steps were unable to resolve the Windows blue screen error. You may need to uninstall and reinstall particular programs.

Before doing this, make sure that your Windows restore function is active and you have an existing restore point set. Determine the running program(s) where the blue screen usually appears and delete and reinstall that/those program(s) through your control panel.

4. Reinstall your Operating System
You can also try reinstalling your Operating System (OS). Important reminder: before reinstalling your OS, back up all important and irreplaceable files on your computer, such as e-mail, work documents, artwork, mp3s, saved games, etc.

Remember: before deleting and reinstalling, make sure that you have the original CD or downloaded files of the program concerned. Otherwise, you won’t be able to reinstall that particular program once deleted.

When all these fail to resolve the blue screen error, it means that the problem may not be software related. You may have a bigger problem with your hardware, be it with your drivers or insufficient memory. There can be many different issues so take the blue screen as a sign to format your computer.

These simple steps should help you permanently repair a blue screen error. It pays to know basic computer repair skills because you don’t always need to take your PC to a technician.
